Khutbah Toolkit: Quick Guide

All praise is due to Allah, we seek his refuge, and ask for his forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from our own bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, no one can misguide him, and whoever Allah misguides, no one can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his messenger.

The Divine Mandate and Moral Clarity

  • The Best Community (Ali-Imran, 110): The Muslim community is divinely commissioned as the “best community” because it encourages good, forbids evil, and maintains belief in Allah. This defines its goal: seeking goodness (khair) for all people.
  • The Choice in Oppression: There are only two positions:
  • The Hadith on Intervention: The Prophet (PBUH) instructed believers to “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one.” Helping an oppressor means “preventing him from oppressing others.”
  • Divine Law (Hadith Qudsi): Allah has “forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another.”

Responding to the Oppressor’s Tactics

  • Ancient Tactics, Modern Struggle: The methods of oppressors are timeless, from Pharaoh (Firaun) framing Prophet Musa (AS) to modern tactics used against current activists.
    • Delegitimization: Oppressors use slander and false accusations (e.g., claiming students are “blocking classes” or are “terrorists/antisemites”) to distract from the actual crime (e.g., mass killing/genocide).
    • Framing: They seek to make those who strive for justice appear evil.
  • The Danger of Inaction:
    • A widespread failure to prevent evil means Allah’s punishment is likely to affect everyone, not just the wrongdoers (Al-Anfal, 25).
    • The Ship Analogy: If the righteous on a ship fail to restrain the wrongdoers from drilling a hole in the hull, all will be destroyed together.
  • Active Resistance: Protests, encampments, and financial support are necessary to refuse complicity and prevent the funding of injustice.

Steadfastness and the Certainty of Victory

  • Learning from History: Past movements, like the Vietnam War protests and the anti-apartheid student movement in South Africa, prove that persistent, long-term struggle works, even when activists face severe repression.
    • Activists who were once scorned (like the Kent State victims) are later celebrated as heroes.
  • Divine Assurance: “Beware of the supplication of the oppressed… By My might and majesty, I will help you in due time.” Justice will come, even if it is delayed.
  • The Path of Consistency (Istiqamah):
    • The Prophet’s advice: “Say ‘I believe in Allah’ – and then be steadfast.”
    • Great change comes from many small, consistent efforts over time.
    • We are commanded to “worship your Lord until the inevitable comes your way” (Al-Hijr, 99), meaning, continue the struggle until death or victory.
  • The Ultimate Goal: Our struggle is a sacrifice for humanity. By striving sincerely, we ensure we stand on the right side of history and, most importantly, have a clear answer to present before Allah (SWT) on the Day of Judgment.
