Khutbah Toolkit: Quick Guide

All praise is due to Allah, we seek his refuge, and ask for his forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from our own bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, no one can misguide him, and whoever Allah misguides, no one can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his messenger.

Preparing for Death

  • We constantly plan for our futures in this dunya, yet we don’t plan for our future in the akhirah.
  • There are countless hadith and verses in the Quran reminding us of death.
  • Death will destroy all the pleasures this dunya ever had to offer.
The best and wisest of people are those who think about death constantly.
  • This is why it is encouraged to visit the graveyard in Islam.
Every single soul will face death—even the Prophet Muhammad SAW had to face it.
  • Thinking about death should not make us feel hopeless or depressed, because death is only the transition between this life and the next life.
  • Rather, death should make us ponder our actions and beliefs and motivate us to be the best Muslims we can be.
  • We can’t physically run away from death, but many of us mentally do so by not thinking about it and distracting ourselves with other things.
  • Ask yourself: what happened to the people you used to know and see every day who are now in their graves?
  •  The hereafter requires our preparation before death.
  • Everything we do in this life will build our lives in the next life.
  • There are people begging to be returned to this world just so they could pray two more rakahs.
  • Our personal Day of Judgement starts at the time of our death.
  • Race to do good deeds before your time comes.

Seeing Death Around Us in Our Ummah

  • We see the reminder of death in Gaza, Sudan, Yemen, and so many more places in our ummah.
  • How can we see those images and not let them change us and remind us of the hereafter?
  • No hardship or pleasure will last forever—death will always come.
  • We may not understand why these things are happening, but we believe that Allah SWT is the best of planners, and we know that His promise is always true.
  • Death is not just another post on social media or another email for janazah at the masjid.

Doing Good Deeds Before Your Death

  • Imam Ash-Shafi‘ says, how can a person be heedless when he knows that the kafan that is going to wrap him has already reached the shelves of the stores?
  • This dunya’s job is to make you forget that one day you have to leave it.
  • From the best of deeds is giving your money and time for the sake of Allah SWT, increasing in your worship, and praying qiyam ul-layl regularly, even outside of Ramadan.
  • We never know when our time will come, so act accordingly.
