Khutbah Toolkit: Quick Guide
All praise is due to Allah, we seek his refuge, and ask for his forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from our own bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, no one can misguide him, and whoever Allah misguides, no one can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his messenger.
Quick Guide: Importance of Seeking Knowledge
- Humanity has been honored with mercy and guidance, and access to Allah’s houses serves as a place of refuge and remembrance. The tradition of Jumu’ah khutbahs, established by the Prophet ﷺ, has continued for over thirteen centuries, with scholars acting as the inheritors of prophetic knowledge and preserving, transmitting, and embodying the legacy of the prophets.
- The current decline in knowledge within the community is evident, reflecting neglect not only in religious sciences but in general learning. Knowledge elevates those who possess it, and the prophets exemplified this by being granted wisdom and understanding, responding with gratitude and devotion, which demonstrates that knowledge is both a blessing and a means of virtue.
- The Prophet ﷺ was commanded to continuously ask Allah for an increase in knowledge, emphasizing that seeking knowledge is a lifelong obligation. Earlier generations excelled not only in religious sciences but also in worldly disciplines, yet over time both sharʿi and worldly knowledge declined. Few now reach positions of distinction or mastery, and many neglect the responsibility of pursuing knowledge with excellence.
- The recitation of Surah al-Kahf on Jumu’ah highlights the importance of consistency and reflection in worship and learning. The story of Musa عليه السلام seeking a teacher demonstrates that even prophets and messengers actively pursued knowledge, showing that seeking knowledge must never cease, regardless of one’s current level of understanding.
- Muslims are called to revive the high standards of learning seen in earlier generations, striving to benefit from scholars and eliminate ignorance. Historically, Muslims contributed greatly to the sciences, yet today much of that knowledge has been preserved by non-Muslims. While children are carefully guided in worldly education from kindergarten through high school, the same structured approach is often missing in Islamic education, resulting in stagnant growth in religious understanding.
- The dedication of an imam teaching Tahara and Salah to middle and high school students, as well as young professionals, illustrates the ongoing opportunities for learning, yet highlights that many adults have neglected even the basics of religious knowledge.
- Earlier generations pursued knowledge with extraordinary dedication, exemplified by a hafidh traveling from Kufa to Medina and then Egypt to verify a single hadith directly from living transmitters. This commitment demonstrates a level of rigor, perseverance, and respect for accuracy that ensured the preservation of authentic knowledge.
Seeking knowledge today does not require such extreme effort, yet even minimal dedication is often neglected. Knowledge elevates a person and commands respect, while ignorance diminishes stature, regardless of age or status. Historical scholars emphasized the virtue and value of knowledge, and it is incumbent to strive to transform those who do not know into those who actively seek and possess knowledge.
