Khutbah Toolkit: Quick Guide
All praise is due to Allah, we seek his refuge, and ask for his forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from our own bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, no one can misguide him, and whoever Allah misguides, no one can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his messenger.
Quick Guide: Between Patience & Gratitude
- Allah سبحانه و تعالى has established that every human will face trials and tests. Humans were created in a state of perfection, yet with inherent flaws and limitations, including limited knowledge and physical weakness. This balance of dignity and deficiency demonstrates that tests are a natural part of life. The proper response to this reality is patience during trials and gratitude during blessings.
- True empowerment and strength are not attained through worldly means but through enduring trials with patience. Al-Imam Ash-Shāfi‘ī رحمه الله explained that a person is not granted power or authority until after being tested. The prophets, including Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, ʿĪsā, and Muḥammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, were all tested, and only through their steadfastness did Allah سبحانه و تعالى grant them empowerment.
- The Qur’an emphasizes that belief is inseparable from trials. Claiming faith does not exempt anyone from being tested, as even the greatest of prophets—Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, ʿĪsā, and Muḥammad صلى الله عليه وسلم—endured immense tribulations. Their experiences demonstrate that tests are an inevitable part of human life and a defining aspect of true faith.
- The story of Nūḥ عليه السلام exemplifies extraordinary patience and perseverance. He called his people for 950 years, facing continuous rejection. His trials extended to his family, as his son refused to join him on the Ark. Despite these hardships, Nūḥ عليه السلام remained steadfast. Even he was tested as such.
- Ibrāhīm عليه السلام was tested through his own father. Despite calling him gently and sincerely to the truth, his father rejected the message, and Ibrāhīm عليه السلام ultimately distanced himself when it became clear that his father was an enemy of Allah. The lives of all prophets and messengers show that no one is exempt from trials; every human is tested in different aspects of life, and even the prophets endured the greatest hardships, highlighting that trials are an essential part of faith and divine wisdom.
- The story of Yūsuf عليه السلام exemplifies patience and divine wisdom. He faced betrayal by his brothers, abandonment, imprisonment, and temptation, yet he remained steadfast and relied on Allah. He endured many trials, and only after enduring them with sabr did Allah سبحانه و تعالى grant him empowerment, establishing him in a position of authority.
- Patience is essential in times of trial and hardship. Human beings were created to be tested, and life and death itself are a means to test patience and faith. True empowerment and strength come through enduring these trials with steadfastness. The stories of the prophets and messengers demonstrate that their leadership and success were granted only after they practiced patience, showing that perseverance through hardship is the path to true empowerment.
- Trials are inevitable and an essential part of faith. Allah سبحانه و تعالى declares that every person will be tested through fear, hunger, loss, and hardship. Those most beloved to Allah, including the prophets and messengers, endured the greatest hardships.
- The trials of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم offer profound lessons for all humanity. His life was marked by rejection, loss, persecution, and sorrow, yet through remembrance and prayer, he found solace and strength. His example shows that patience in hardship, coupled with devotion and worship, leads to true empowerment, and that steadfast faith and constant remembrance of Allah are the paths to relief and strength for every believer.
- Empowerment is a blessing that must be responsibly preserved. Those granted it should establish prayer, give charity, promote good, and forbid evil. Gratitude manifests through fulfilling these responsibilities, and a believer’s life is balanced between patience and gratitude. True strength lies not only in attaining empowerment but also in maintaining it with perseverance, thankfulness, and obedience to Allah سبحانه و تعالى.
- True gratitude is shown by devotion and obedience, not by neglecting worship when blessings are granted. Every blessing should inspire greater prayer, charity, and adherence to divine guidance, as well as promoting good and forbidding evil. This approach strengthens the believer, benefits the community, and invites further blessings from Allah, who promises to increase what is given to those who are grateful.
- The believer’s life is guided by two essential principles: patience and gratitude. At any moment, one is either called to endure trials with patience or to respond to blessings with gratitude. Hardship requires steadfastness until Allah سبحانه و تعالى provides relief, while blessings demand worship, good deeds, and moral responsibility. Life alternates between these two states, a balance unique to the believer, who relies entirely on Allah سبحانه و تعالى and navigates existence through patience in adversity and gratitude in ease.
- The believer’s life is unique, with every event carrying goodness because reliance is on Allah’s perfect knowledge rather than human understanding.
- What may seem like difficulty or deprivation often contains hidden goodness, and leaving all affairs to Allah ensures that every matter unfolds according to ultimate benefit and divine wisdom.
