Khutbah Toolkit: Quick Guide

All praise is due to Allah, we seek his refuge, and ask for his forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from our own bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, no one can misguide him, and whoever Allah misguides, no one can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his messenger.

  • Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal was one of the greatest scholars of the ummah, widely known for his knowledge, patience through trials, and lifelong contributions to Islamic scholarship.
  • During one of his journeys to a distant town, he was not recognized by the locals and intended to spend the night in the masjid after ‘Isha, but he was asked to leave.
  • With nowhere else to stay, he eventually found a place to rest outside a bakery in the cold night, where a baker later discovered him and invited him inside, offering warmth.
  • The baker worked through the night preparing food for the early morning while consistently engaging in dhikr, especially frequent seeking of forgiveness, which Imam Ahmad noticed and quietly observed as he rested in the bakery.
  • At Fajr time, after they prayed together, Imam Ahmad expressed his admiration for the baker’s consistency in worship and asked whether this was a regular habit.
  • The baker said it was and explained that his constant remembrance of Allah had brought immense blessings in his life, as most of his supplications had been answered.
  • One supplication was still yet to be answered, and it was the desire to meet Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, whom the baker deeply respected and admired due to his knowledge, reputation, and endurance through trials.
  • Upon hearing this, Imam Ahmad was moved to tears and revealed his identity, explaining that instead of the baker being brought to him, Allah had brought him directly to the baker, demonstrating how Allah arranges affairs in unexpected ways.
  • The encounter illustrated that true status in the sight of Allah is not based on outward recognition or social standing, but on sincerity, taqwa, and hidden deeds known only to Allah.
  • This story shows that seeking forgiveness leads to mercy and provision, emphasizing that spiritual practices like istighfar carry both worldly and spiritual benefits.
  • Many of Allah’s awliyah walk among people unnoticed, but they are quite well known in the heavens.
  • Consistent, small acts of worship are beloved to Allah, even more than large but inconsistent deeds, and the baker’s nightly dhikr was an example of this principle in practice.
  • The story demonstrated that sincere dua is powerful and never wasted, and that Allah سبحانه و تعالى can fulfill requests in ways beyond expectation or planning. One should not feel shy in asking Allah, and nothing is difficult for Him.
  • Anybody can turn back to Allah at any time. No matter how far a person may feel, returning requires a single sincere step, and transformation can occur by Allah’s will.
  • The narration from the Prophet ﷺ and the Qur’anic verse about Allah being near and responding to supplication reinforce that Allah hears and answers those who call upon Him.
