MAS YP Halaqa invites you to:
Islam and Evolution: A Two Part Series
Friday Night 2/25/11 & 3/4/11 @ 7:15pm (After Isha prayer)
ISBCC Cafe, 100 Malcolm X Boulevard, Roxbury, MA 02120
The theory of evolution by natural selection is understood by many modern thinkers to be one of the greatest intellectual achievements in human history. How should we understand this theory as Muslims? Is evolution compatible with an Islamic account of history? If not, what does that say about Islam's relationship with modern science?
In this two part series, we will begin by first trying to understand what the theory of evolution by natural selection really is and what it claims. We will then try to pinpoint the exact nature of the conflict between this theory and Islam. Given the conflict, we will then survey the different strategies Muslims can employ in approaching evolutionary theory. Finally, we will pursue one of these strategies in depth by considering several critiques of natural selection in the biological and philosophical literature.
